กุญแจสำคัญของ wish: tense ที่ตามหลัง wish ถอยหลังหนึ่งขั้นเสมอ เหมือน Reported Speech — เพราะ wish พูดถึงสิ่งที่ไม่เป็นความจริง (unreal / counterfactual)
3 รูปแบบหลักของ Wish
(ความจริง: ไม่รู้)
"She wishes she were taller."
(ความจริง: ไม่ได้เรียน)
"He wishes he hadn't said that."
(หงุดหนิดพฤติกรรม)
"I wish it would stop raining."
Type 1 — อยากให้ปัจจุบันต่างออกไป
สิ่งที่อยากให้เป็นแต่ไม่ใช่ความจริงตอนนี้ — ใช้ Past Simple หลัง wish:
I wish I spoke French. (แต่ฉันพูดไม่ได้)
She wishes she had more time. (แต่เธอไม่มีเวลาพอ)
I wish it weren't so cold. (แต่มันหนาวมาก)
หมายเหตุ: หลัง wish ใช้ were สำหรับทุก subject ได้ (formal) → "I wish I were…" หรือ "I wish I was…" ก็ได้ในภาษาพูด
Type 2 — เสียใจกับอดีต
สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้น (หรือไม่เกิดขึ้น) ในอดีตและเสียใจ — ใช้ Past Perfect หลัง wish:
I wish I had taken that job. (แต่ฉันไม่ได้รับไว้)
She wishes she hadn't eaten so much. (แต่กินไปแล้ว)
I wish I had known about this earlier.
Type 3 — อยากให้ใครเปลี่ยนพฤติกรรม
แสดงความไม่พอใจหรืออยากให้ใคร/อะไรทำอีกอย่าง — ใช้ would หลัง wish:
I wish you would listen to me. (อยากให้ฟัง)
I wish he wouldn't drive so fast. (ไม่อยากให้ขับเร็ว)
I wish it would stop raining. (อยากให้ฝนหยุด)
ไม่ใช้ wish + would กับ I หรือ we เป็น subject ใน wish clause ("I wish I would…" ฟังดูแปลก — ใช้ "I wish I could…" แทน)
If Only — เน้นกว่า Wish
If only ใช้กฎเดียวกับ wish ทุกประการ แต่เน้นอารมณ์แรงกว่า — มักใช้ในงานเขียน:
If only I knew the answer! (= I wish I knew — เน้นกว่า)
If only I had studied harder! (เสียใจมากกว่า)
If only you would stop interrupting!
Wish vs Hope — อย่าสับสน
wish = อยากให้เป็นอีกแบบ แต่มัน ไม่จริง / เป็นไปได้ยาก (ตามด้วยรูปอดีต) | hope = หวังในสิ่งที่ ยังเป็นไปได้ในอนาคต (ตามด้วย present หรือ will)
I wish I had more money. (ความจริง: ตอนนี้ไม่มี — ไม่จริง)
I hope I get the job. (ยังมีโอกาส — เป็นไปได้)
"I wish you have a great trip." (เป็นเรื่องที่เป็นไปได้) → I hope you have a great trip.
ข้อผิดพลาดที่คนไทยทำบ่อย
"I wish I know English." → I wish I knew English. (Past Simple หลัง wish)
"I wish I studied harder yesterday." → I wish I had studied harder. (Past Perfect สำหรับอดีต)
"I wish you stop talking." → I wish you would stop talking. (would สำหรับพฤติกรรม)
1. I can't drive. → I wish I ___ (can) drive.
2. She didn't come to the party. → She wishes she ___ (come).
3. My neighbour plays loud music. → I wish he ___ (not play) so loud.
